PAST MOVEMENTS IN THE RHONDDA VALLEY

THE 1904-5 REVIVAL
The Rhondda Valley is indebted, in the first place, to the great revival in 1904-5, when many came to realise the truth of the Assurance of Salvation. Although the Rhondda could boast of great congregations and eminent ministers, and wonderful congregational singing, yet the truth of "Sicrwydd Cadwedigaeth" was not realised in general until 1904-5.

This wonderful visitation of God was soon forgotten, and the truths neglected, and things soon became as it was in pre-revivial days of coldness and indifference, until in many districts the spiritual life was at an ebb.

Many continued to pray until God answered by fire. Many were filled with the Holy Ghost, and the sign of speaking in Tongues followed. Some thought this was going to be a great blessing to the Welsh valley but, to the consternation of many hearts , it brought division. Many mocked at the experience, others doubted, but praise be to God others realised that He answers prayer. The latter class was soon ejected from the chapels, and others, who realised that this visitation was of God , formed small mission. These missions for the most part began in cottages, eventually small mission Halls were built in some places, and vacant shops were rented, until the body of believers were recognised as "Pentecostals" and their churches as Pentecostal assemblies

PORTH ASSEMBLY
One of the most powerful assemblies affecting the valley was the Porth Assembly, where the late Pastor Tom Saunders was a great instrument with God in leading many into the blessings promised in God's Word. The hall was a former carpenter's shop, turned into an assembly hall, and many are the souls who thanked God for that place. Three other assemblies in those days were Tonypandy, Clydach Vale, and Ferndale. At Porth assembly the gift of prophecy was manifested, This was a new thing in the midst, and was, like the second blessing, doubted. As a result many of the channels cried that they would prophecy no more. But God continued to speak despite the opposition and the counterfeits, and conviction followed.
